Results of the Reston Issues Poll at the Reston Festival July 8-9, 2006

The graphics below represent the results of RCA's Reston Issues Poll at the Reston Festival in July 2006.  
The first graph shows the rank based on how many people chose each issue as important.  The second graph shows the rank of importance placed on each issue by the voters.  Transportation, Reston Governance, Affordable Housing, Business Development and Public Safety are clearly important issues in both measurements.

Of the issues below, pick 3 which you feel are the most important facing Reston today and in the future and 3 which you feel are somewhat important – number from 1 to 6, with 1 being the most important.        (After each topic below are some examples of what the issue could involve.  You can also circle any of these to show your preference on their importance)  


 Accessibility and Visitability in housing and commercial buildings

Mandate accessibility/visitability (at least one housing entrance without steps) in new development.
Obtain grants to improve accessibility/visitability within the Reston community.
 

Affordable Housing  
*
Enable people to live where they work - one of the Bob Simon's founding principles of Reston  

 
Business Development     
*
Control commercial over-development of Reston’s “green spaces”
Encourage mixed use development for Metro station areas
 

Community Healthcare     
*
Establish community-wide CPR, First Aid and Exercise training programs
Obtain grants to develop high-technology based community healthcare improvements, including telemedicine  

 Multicultural Aspects of Reston Life/Immigrant Assimilation Issues 
Achieve greater participation of all ethnic groups in the governing process
Increase availability of English language and immersion courses; offer multi-cultural issues training classes  

 Public Safety   
*Track crimes and auto/pedestrian accidents and offer this info to the community online
Establish evacuation plan especially for people with disabilities from multi-story buildings
 

 Reston Governance
Have a referendum to determine if Reston should be a town
Consolidate Reston Association, Reston Town Center Association and Reston Center for Industry & Government (RCIG)
Consolidate Reston Community Center , Reston Association and Southgate Center recreation facilities
Negotiate such things as Reston-wide contracts for trash and snow removal
 

 Transportation
*
Study impact of Metro on Reston life style, congestion, housing values, etc.
Ensure Reston participation in Metro decisions
 

 
Virtual Infrastructure and Communication - includes both connectivity and content 
*Create wireless broadband service for all of Reston, i.e. make Reston a “hot-spot” such as Tempe and Scottsdale , AZ
*Develop centralized on-line bulletin board/calendar for Reston organizations
Create Reston radio station and/or enhanced Ch 28 programming
